Welcome back! As usual, we’ve been very busy this summer. But this summer was particularly special, in that we made several huge changes to classrooms on campus. Here’s a brief overview:
No more padlocks/alarm pads! If you’ve ever struggled to perfectly align a padlock’s digits while juggling student papers, your laptop, and a precariously-balanced caffeinated drink, you can appreciate what this means for the human experience at Illinois. Not to fear for security, though–every piece of equipment within the ITS cabinet has its own alarm, so if someone’s hands should get itchy for state property, the police will be immediately notified (as will the rest of the neighborhood).
Individual login. Rather than grappling with padlocks, users will now breeze up to the ITS cabinet, enter their NetIDs and ICS passwords into the login screen, and get access to a private desktop in moments. ICS passwords are computer lab passwords, but they should–in most cases–be the same as your AD/email password. Want to check your ICS password before your class starts? Visit any ICS computer lab on campus, and a helpful staff person will work with you to test your password and alleviate your fears. Or if you know your AD password and want to change your ICS password online, virtually visit the Password Manager. Make sure to leave the box for ICS password checked. And don’t forget to log off the machines when you’re done by clicking the red LOGOFF button in the upper-right corner of the screen!
You get an upgrade! And you get an upgrade! Everyone gets an upgrade! OK, we’re not lucky enough to be Oprah, and we can’t give everyone a car (alas), but both the hardware and software have been upgraded in our rooms, meaning faster performance time and a better user experience. Classroom upgrades and fresh installs have also been completed across campus, including Huff Hall 209.
On top of these changes, we’ve also said goodbye to Dan Doolen, who retired in June, welcomed our new head, Drew MacGregor, and hired 10 new student employees, from whom you’ll hear soon on this very blog. We’re excited to start a new year on our great campus, and we look forward to making your year as hassle-free as possible. So give us a call or shoot us an email about how we can help you improve your teaching with technology at Illinois.
